Division of Electrical Sciences of the Indian Instititute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) proposes to conduct an international conference on the theme: Managing Complexity in a Distibuted World (MCDES), in Bangalore, India, during May 27-31, 2008. This conference will be a part of the centenary celebrations of IISc. It will serve as a forum to present current work by researchers from around the world, and act as a venue to provide stimulating discussions, resulting in cross-fertilization of ideas from diverse subject areas of electrical sciences, such as computing, communications, networking, signal processing, VLSI design, energy systems, machine learning, and etc. The conference will be unique in that its sessions and tracks will be planned to promote such inter-disciplinary interaction.

MCDES 2008 will focus on all issues related to managing complexity in a distributed world, such as, technologies, algorithms, energy issues, system design and implementation, applications, tehno-economic and environmental issues, etc., from the electrical & electronics engineering, communication, and computing points of view. The 2008 Game Demo Contest invites demo abstracts. The participant has to simply send their idea for the next great game! As part of the entry, coding can be submitted or game design tips to improve compatibility and playability on Intel® Integrated Graphics and be eligible for special judges’ awards like a high-end gaming laptop.

In celebration of the ISTE Day 2008, the Delhi Section of the Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) is hosting a conference on “Technology for Rural India: Challenges and Perspectives”. The conference will focus on strategic technological development and research on problems specific to rural India. The event is targeted to educationists, researchers and students and will include technical sessions, invited lectures, special workshops, interactive sessions and student activities.

Student Essay Contest:
With a view to sensitizing students to rural problems that can be approached through technology, the Delhi Section of ISTE is organizing a special essay contest on the above topic. In order to participate in this contest, students have to organize a visit to some rural area to get a first-hand experience on those problems of rural life that can be solved through innovative technologies. Institutions are requested to provide all logistics support to the students in this regard. Each participant is expected to identify one problem and work out a well defined technological solution to tackle it. The essay should portray his/her personal experience along with a technical description of the problem and its solution. Essays will be judged on literary as well as technical presentation. Kindly limit the essay to 6 printed pages including diagrams if any and indicate the student’s name, contact details and the name and address of his Institution. The essays should be duly signed by the Head of the Institution should be sent to the address given below by April 30, 2008. An electronic version should also be emailed. Selected essays will be eligible for presentation at the conference during a special session. Authors of selected essays must deliver a 10 minutes presentation.

Students from 6-12th grades (11-18 years Old) from anywhere in the world. There can be individual or team participation where team size may vary from two to six or more.

NASA Space Settlement Contest is an annual contest co sponsored by NASA Ames and the National Space Society(NSS). In this contest the Students are required to develop space settlement designs and related material.

Space colonies are permanent communities in orbit, as opposed to living on the Moon or other planets. The work of Princeton physicist Dr. O’Neill and others have shown that such colonies are technically feasible, although expensive. Settlers of this high frontier are expected to live inside large air-tight rotating structures holding hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people along with the animals, plants, and single celled organisms vital to comfort and survival. There are many advantages to living in orbit: zero-g recreation, environmental independence, plentiful solar energy, and terrific views to name a few. There is plenty of room for everyone who wants to go; the materials from a single asteroid can build space colonies with living space equal to about 500 times the surface area of the Earth.

While designing a space colony, students will have a chance to study physics, mathematics, space science, environmental science, and many other disciplines.Contest submissions may include designs, essays, stories, models, and artwork. Students can design entire colonies or focus on one aspect of orbital living. A class or school may submit a joint project where small teams tackle different areas in a coordinated fashion.

Note: Grades 6-9 and 10-12 are judged separately, except for the grand prize.

The ABCDE Support Grant 2008 is sponsored by the National Treasury of South Africa.

Successful applicants will have their full travel expenses, visa costs and accommodation covered during the time of the conference. The ticket will be provided to the grantee and hotel will be booked for him/ her. The participants are responsible for their own visa arrangements, with assistance from the host country, if necessary. Transportation from and to the airport will be provided. Local transportation in the candidate’s country of origin will not be covered.

The registration fee is payable online after application decisions have been made; You may pay a student fee of US$300 if you are currently a student, a recent graduate (out of school for no more than six months at the time of the conference), or accepted to and planning to attend an accredited institution within six months after the start of the conference. We will review exceptions to this on a case-by-case basis. Otherwise, you are required to pay the professional fee of US$350 in order to register.

The event strives towards seeding of new projects.

ILUG-D has been conducting awareness and proof-of-concept events since 1999. These events have been extremely popular and very well attended and accepted by the community and the public in general. Traditionally, the event is held at a time in September to coincide with one of the many birthdays of Linux! The event attracts not only geeks from across the country but many from schools, colleges and even the small business houses. There is always something for everyone. The ISEC conference is planned as the main yearly conference of the newly created Special Interest Group on Software Engineering, SIGSE under the umbrella of the Computer Society of India, CSI. The First ISEC will be held in Hyderabad, an important IT destination in India. ISEC will bring together researchers and practitioners from across the world to share the results of their work.

Technical papers describing original and unpublished results of conceptual, empirical, and experimental software engineering research, as well as those describing Industry Experience will be in the program. ISEC will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to meet and share cutting-edge advancements in the field of software engineering.
