This joint workshop by the World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) and Maastricht Economic and social Research and training centre on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) of the United Nations University (UNU) is intended as a platform for the discussion and promotion of research in this regard.

Workshop topics include:

Jagriti Yatra is an annual train journey that will take 400 of India’s highly motivated youth between the ages of 18-25 on a sixteen day national odyssey, introducing them to unsung heroes of India. The aim is to awaken the spirit of entrepreneurship – both social and economic within India’s youth by exposing them to individuals and institutions that are developing unique solutions to India’s challenges. Through this national event we will inspire them to lead and develop institutions nationally and within their communities.

Youth are increasingly celebrity conscious, while those Indians who have made lasting social and economic impact are often not visible as role models. The Jagriti Yatra aims to showcase inspiring success stories by taking young Indians to meet these “real heroes”. These role models, located around the country particularly in rural and semi urban India will demonstrate how social and economic enterprise has succeeded. We propose to engage the national media to act as a multiplier of this message by projecting it to the millions of Indians who will watch this journey unfold across the country, and become an annual event. With this we seek to awaken the aspiration of ‘being the change’ in the youth of India.

Jagriti Yatra aims at having extensive impact. Raising awareness in college campuses assisted by media campaigns with jingles, slogans and posters crafted to appeal to youth in metros but also the vast non-English speaking heartland, including reliance on SMS and mobile networks to reach beyond those who are not connected through internet.

Distinguished mentors from various fields will also be selected to come on board as facilitators, upon invitation by this distinguished panel. We also intend to attract eminent personalities are honored by the confirmation of participation of Kiran Bedi, Mark Tully and possibly Dr Rajendra Pachauri, all of whom took part in the last Yatra.

The University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” Business Start-up Centre in Skopje, Macedonia together with CITY College (an affiliated institution of University of Sheffield) - Computer Science Department, Thessaloniki, Greece are organizing the first International Conference for Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Regional Development ICEIRD 2008.

The objective of the Conference is to gather in the same place decision makers (government, ministries and state agencies), scientists (universities, research and development centers, start-up centers and incubators) and practitioners (SME’s) in order to discuss topic that are of crucial importance for national competitiveness and increased regional development in the South East Europe.

The conference is planned for 4 (four) days and it will take place in Skopje and Ohrid, Macedonia. The first day, will be more a strategic planning day and the organizing committee, will meet and finalize the whole event. This will also be the time when the strategic issues for the future of the Conference will be revised.

The next day is the main conference meeting in Skopje where after introductory sessions, 4 parallel presentation panels will take place. ICE 2008 invites presentations covering the full range of conceptual or practical papers in nature examining technical, sociological, economic/business, technology and legal issues. Any case studies by practitioners are almost welcomed.

Event: Innovation Development Enterprise Action Service(IDEAS) Competition (Website)

The IDEAS Competition encourages teams to develop and implement projects that make a positive change in the world. Entries are judged on their innovation, feasibility, and community impact. The Competition is open to everyone, but at least one third of each team must be full-time MIT students.

Participants work in teams to develop designs, plans, strategies, materials and mechanisms that benefit communities, locally, nationally or internationally. Using more than $40,000 in cash awards, as well as additional development grants, the teams can take an effective step toward resolving pressing individual and community challenges. The IDEAS Competition highlights MIT’s support for student enterprise. It provides a chance for students to be creative, recognizes their ability to do important work for the public good, and provides an opportunity to have others recognize it as well.
